Frequently Asked Questions
Why the name “Messiah Lutheran”?
The name Messiah is the Hebrew Old Testament word translated as “Christ” in the Greek New Testament (both words mean Anointed One). This ancient title was used to encourage people with the promise that God would send a Savior into the world. This Savior, of course, is Jesus. The name Lutheran comes from Martin Luther, a 16th Century church reformer who is widely recognized for his emphasis on salvation as a gift from God based solely upon the life, suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus. During the Middle Ages, the church had begun increasingly to teach that a person could earn his/her salvation based upon good works. Luther helped to put the focus back on God who alone does that saving work, while we respond to God’s love by serving Him with our whole life.
Messiah Lutheran, as a name, embraces the Promise of a Savior, Jesus, and the undeserved gift of salvation given to us through Jesus.
What can I expect from a worship service at Messiah? We describe our worship on Sunday morning as “Biblical Content In Contemporary Form.” We cherish God’s Word and seek to reflect our faithfulness to God throughout the entire worship service. Consequently, we have certain elements that appear every week, such as Confession and Forgiveness, the Reading of God’s Word, the celebration of Holy Communion, a Creedal form (spoken or sung), and a Message. Our music and style is Contemporary with a full band and praise team. We also enjoy mixing in some traditional hymns that are played and sung in a contemporary form.
How should I dress for worship?
We are a “Come-as-you-are” congregation. Some people wear jeans and shorts, while others dress more formally. Like going to a restaurant, you will find people dressed in a variety of styles. The main thing, though, is to come with a heart that is open and expecting God to do a life-changing work in and through you.
*Please note that the word “worship” actually has a much wider meaning that applies to every part of life, not just what happens for an hour on Sunday morning. In other words, Biblical worship means “to serve God with your whole life.” We look at everything that we do, both inside and outside of Sunday morning, as an act of worship. Sunday is an opportunity for us to obey God’s command to gather together so that we can receive renewal and restoration from God, and to learn how to respond to God’s love by giving back to Him our whole life.
Actually, we do both depending on the ages of our children. We value our time of worship together as the Family of God and, as such, everyone remains... More>>
